Why employers check so carefully
A driver carries goods, vehicles and sometimes passengers. A mistake can cost money and, worse, can hurt someone. That is why even a small business will ask a driver for more papers than they ask from other staff. If you know what they will check, you can walk in ready and save everyone's time.
The licence is the first thing they look at
Employers look at three things on a licence. First, whether it is valid and not expired. Second, whether the type matches the vehicle: a two wheeler, a car, a light goods vehicle or a heavy vehicle each need the right category. Third, whether the name and photo match you. Carry the original and one copy.
If your licence is close to expiry, renew it before you apply. A lapsed licence is the commonest reason a driver loses a good offer.
Identity and address papers
Besides the licence, expect to be asked for a photo identity card and an address proof. If you live on rent and your address is different from the card, tell the employer straight away and ask what they accept. Many employers are flexible when you are open about it.
A short driving check
Some employers take a quick test. They may ask you to drive a short distance, reverse the vehicle, park it in a tight space and show how you read the dashboard. They watch how calm you are and how you treat the vehicle. Do not try to impress with speed. A steady, careful driver is what they want.
Vehicle papers and basic knowledge
If you bring your own vehicle, you will need the registration paper, the insurance paper and a valid pollution certificate. If the employer gives the vehicle, ask who is responsible for fines and small repairs. Write it down. Also know the simple checks you should do every morning: tyres, lights, brakes, fuel and horn.
Background and references
For jobs where you handle goods or enter customer premises, employers may ask for a reference from a previous employer or a local contact. Keep the phone numbers of two people who can speak well of your work. Tell them in advance so that they are not surprised when the call comes.
If you are new to driving for work
Driving for a job is different from driving for yourself. You will deal with traffic at odd hours, tight lanes, waiting time and customers who are in a hurry. Practise planning your route before you leave, keep a charged phone and a power bank, and never argue on the road. Employers keep drivers who stay calm and keep their word about timing.
Rules you should know
Follow the speed limit, carry your papers in the vehicle and never drive after a long night without rest. If you get a fine, tell the employer and keep the receipt. Honest communication builds trust faster than anything else.

Before you go
Never pay anyone for a job, an interview or a uniform. Details such as pay, shift and place can change, so confirm them with the employer before you join.
Common questions
Do I need a commercial licence for every driver job?
No. The type depends on the vehicle. Delivery on a two wheeler and driving a private car need different categories from a goods vehicle. Ask the employer which category is required before you apply.
What if my licence is from another state?
A valid licence is accepted across the country, but your address proof may differ. Tell the employer early and carry a document that shows where you stay now.
Will they take a driving test?
Many do, but it is short. They look for calm, careful driving and good control of the vehicle, not speed.
Can an employer keep my original licence?
A fair employer checks it and returns it. Do not hand over original papers for safekeeping. Give a copy and ask them to note that they have seen the original.
